SWTOR: Bioware responds to Player questions about Warzone Arenas
With the publication of the Warzone Arena blog post on swtor.com, Assistant Designer Alex Modny is answering player questions about Warzone Arenas on the forums.
Nice can’t wait, BTW I noticed a typo:
Where it says Corellia don’t you mean Makeb?
So here is the skinny on that. Yes the first picture in the blog post is of the Makeb Mesa Arena and yes there is an Arena located on Corellia. We originally wanted to launch 2.4 with Makeb Mesa Arena but we found a really nasty performance issue that needs to get fixed and polished before we launch it, so Corellia Square will be replacing it!
So to clarify, the 3 Warzone Arenas you will be seeing on PTS this Friday are Corellia Square, Orbital Station and Tatooine Canyon.
Alex, a question about matchmaking – when queuing as a group of 4 for a ranked arena, will the system match you based on an average of your team’s rating? The highest? Something else?
The average of your team’s rating. In addition, if the matchmaker can’t find a team close to your team’s average rating the range of acceptable rating will slowly increase.
So I take it your arena ranked queue options are either solo or in a group of 4…no groups of 2 or 3, correct?
Thirdly I applaud the way you have introduce a system as to not drag out arena matches needlessly, but something I want to address though: does the gass eventually cover the entire playing field, or does it end up funneling you into a small part of the field and you still have to fight it out eventually?
The (spherical) gas cloud slowly moves in on the center of the Arena and once it closes into the center it will cover the whole playing field until the round is over.
Will solo ranked Q and group ranked Q have separate ratings?
Yes, totally separate.
Sorry if this question comes accross as thick but I’m skim reading on my phone so I might have missed it. Are these arenas just for level 55 (ranked?) or are they going to be available as non-ranked/under 55 too?
Available to anyone Level 10 and up!
Will we be able to respec while waiting for the zone to begin? Possible screwing up balance?
No respecs while in a Warzone or while in the PvP queue.
Will the arenas use the same brackets? 10-29, 30-54 and 55?
Yes, same brackets.
Combat res? What will be done? Commando dps will have a huge asset there.
Combat resurrections will not be allowed in Warzone Arenas.
-If the test server finds that certain builds or classes are unwanted for Arenas, do you plan to address that?
Of course! We are going to pay close attention to what builds and classes players are leaning towards and away from on PTS. If something comes up we will take appropriate action.
I may have read this wrong, but since arenas are being queued by roles, is there the possibility to have normal warzones queue by roles?
We have discussed this and we might do this at some point but not for 2.4. A lot more considerations need to be made for this to work.
-In your testing with the toxic gas, has anyone been able to send in a group of tank build sins, and wait it out at the center, and beat other classes by sheer HP amount and knocking the other team back into the gas?
We have tried this and the HP amount and knockbacks didn’t give them a significant advantage over other tools that other classes have. Since the gas deals damage based off of health percentage and goes through defenses having more HP doesn’t directly mean you can last longer in the gas.
-If I respec outside of a warzone, and leave all of the points unspent – can I spend the points in a warzone?
You cannot spend skill points while in the queue or while in a Warzone. If you did this you would have no spec while in a match.
Is the Matchmaking system based on the player’s class archetype or on the player’s current spec.
How is your role determined if you have no spec slotted since it seems possible to be in a match without one?
You are considered DPS and your team will not like you very much
Firstly, you said in a previous post that you’ll be keeping the 10-29, 30-54 and 55 brackets for Arenas. How will this work in terms of Ranked matches? Will the 10-29 and 30-54 brackets be considered "Non-Ranked" Arenas or will sub-55 players now be able to participate in Ranked?
Ranked is only for max level characters.
Secondly, how will a player’s role be determined? Is it going to be a system similar to Group Finder, where you declare your role? Or will it be based off of Skill Tree distribution, gear, stances when applicable, etc.? I only ask since I can think of some hybrid instances when someone heavily invested in a Damage tree could actually be geared and "stanced" for Tanking. E.g. Defense/Vigilance hybrid.
Role is determined by your characters current specialization in the Skill Tree.
Finally, can we queue for both 4v4 Arenas and regular 8v8 Warzones (non-Ranked) at the same time or do we need to choose one or the other?
You can join the Warzone queue to participate in them both.
How many rounds will each Arena warzone be? Best of 1? Best of 3? Best of 5?
Warzone Arenas will go to PTS with Best of 3 rounds.
What consumables will players be limited to in warzone arenas? Will it be the same as the current structure? (any type of health pots, warzone adrenals, any type of cybertech grenade?)
The limits that are in place currently for consumables in Warzones on Live will be present in Warzone Arenas.
Will 8v8 still exist for non-ranked?
8v8 Warzones for non-ranked aren’t going anywhere.
My question I was going to ask is somewhat about this and that is will there be any chance to separate 8v8 and arenas in the normal queues if it shows that server populations can handle it?
That is a possibility depending on other factors besides queue population as well, but not promises and definitely no timetable on such a change.
Are we going to be able to queue as an 8 man team in non ranked?
Not at this time, no.
One question I don’t think I saw in this long thread is will there be stats displayed after each match like 8-man warzones such as overall DPS, Heals, Protection, etc.?
Stats will be displayed after every round and at the end of the match. You will also be able to tab to previous rounds or see a match total. Another cool addition is Adv Class icons will be displayed on the scoreboard instead of base class icons from now on.
What determines a role spec in full?
The matchmaking system assigns a role based on which tree has the most skill points spent in it.
Will the two new operations and the Oricon daily area also be put on the PTR this Friday?
Nope. This Friday we are only focusing on Warzone-Arenas.
What about specs that are 22/22/2?
It will default to DPS.
