SWTOR: New changes to Powertech and Vanguard DPS

Associate Designer David Demaree went on the forums today to post some new changes to the Powertech/Vanguard DPS spec as well an explanation for the low DPS parsing on target dummies.

Hello Powertechs and Vanguards!

Thanks for testing the changes on the PTS; it is greatly appreciated!

I’d like to report some upcoming changes (thanks in no small part to YOUR feedback!), and give some insight on why Powertech Pyrotech damage is parsing so far behind on target dummies. First, here are the changes that will be forthcoming (look for these in an update to the PTS):

Bounty Hunter

Powertech
Pyrotech

  • Increased the chance for Flame Burst to trigger Combustible Gas Cylinder in the Bursting Flame skill by 5% per rank (now 20/40/60% chance, up from 15/30/45%).
  • Sweltering Heat has been redesigned: While Combustible Gas Cylinder is active, damage dealt by Flame Burst has a 50/100% chance to reduce the target’s movement speed by 40% for 6 seconds.

Trooper

Vanguard
Assault Specialist

  • Increased the chance for Ion Pulse to trigger Plasma Cell in the Ionized Ignition skill by 5% per rank (now 20/40/60% chance, up from 15/30/45%).
  • Sweltering Heat has been redesigned: While Plasma Cell is active, damage dealt by Ion Pulse has a 50/100% chance to reduce the target’s movement speed by 40% for 6 seconds.

Secondly, the Burnout skill does very little to help your DPS against a target dummy (because a target dummy never falls below 30% health, which in turn doesn’t allow you to see the main benefit of Burnout). In a real encounter, the new Pyrotech/Assault Specialist is very competitive with the new Advanced Prototype/Tactics. While Advanced Prototype/Tactics is more consistent, a good run with Pyrotech/Assault Specialist can actually come out ahead. That was true with only a 45% chance for Flame Burst/Ion Pulse to trigger Combustible Gas Cylinder/Plasma Cell, and giving it a 60% chance will only make it happen even more often.

If you get a chance, I highly recommend you try both specs out in a Flashpoint or Operation. It’s best if you can run it twice to compare how each spec does against the same boss. In fact, both specs should be parsing ahead of the hybrid now (in a real environment – but unfortunately not on target dummies), so if that isn’t the case, please let us know.

Haha. Oh that’s bs. Other classes with the 30% burn skill still parse much much higher. They still refuse to admit theres a pt problem. GJ Bioware.
