ESO Enchanting Glyphs and Runes Guide

A guide to ESO Enchanting, Runes and Glyphs. Original guide written by Malthol with additions and revisions.

Basics

Enchanters create glyphs that can be applied to weapons, armors, or jewelry. Each glyph has one effect, a level range, and a quality. Each glyph can only be applied to one type of item (weapon, armor, or jewelry) and only to item within the specified level range. These glyphs boost your stats beyond what your armor and weapons can give so you will definitely want to glyph your gear.

Glyphs are created by combining three runes. Each glyph requires one of each of the three types of rune: Potency, Essence, and Aspect.

  • Potency runes dictate the level of item a glyph can be placed on
  • Potency and Essence Runes combine to determine the exact effects of a glyph and what type of items it can be placed on
  • Aspect Runes determine what rarity the rune is and thus the size of the effect.

Runes can be obtained by deconstructing glyphs at the Enchanting stations or by gathering runes out in the open world.

Once you have the runes, seek out an enchanting station to craft or deconstruct your glyphs. Enchanting stations can be found typically near the Mage’s Guild but sometimes they are housed in a separate building. Look for the icon for enchanting stations on your map and watch out for the little flag that mark the various buildings to know which one contains an enchanting station.

Apply Glyphs

Glyphs can be applied to weapons, armor and jewelry by right clicking an item in your inventory or character window and select the enchant option.

Leveling Enchanting

Save the glyphs you get from random world drops and deconstruct them. Also pair up with another enchanter and exchange glyphs to deconstruct as you get much more enchanting XP by deconstructing glyphs others have created than your own.

Here is a chart provided by @kly/Kneeneth Younger III showing the XP you get for crafting/deconstructing glyphs. Note that the deconstructing XP values are those for deconstructing other players’s crafted glyphs. World drop glyphs deconstruction yield around 80-90% of these values.

  • Translating a new rune yields much more XP and is not included in the chart. You should always translate new runes if you can
  • It is a known issue that veteran glyphs give less XP for crafting/deconstructing (red values in chart)

Potency Runes

Potency Runes come in two categories. These runes determine the item levels that the Glyph can be applied to, and they determine either the additive or subtractive nature of the Glyph. We’ll call the two categories Subtractive and Additive.

Essence Runes

Essence Runes determine the base type of effect the Glyph will have. The exact effect and what item the glyph can be applied to are determined by the combination of Potency and Essence runes.

  • Boots, Shoulders, Gloves, and Belt slot have minor glyph slot that will not grant you the full effect. Helm, Chest, Legs, and Shield have major glyph slots that will grant you full effect of the glyph

Enchanting Skills and Addons

Skills

Under Craft –> Enchanting you will find all the skills related to Enchanting.

  • Aspect Improvement (4 tiers): Allow you to use Fine, Superior, Epic, and Legendary Aspect runes to make glyphs of the eso-enchanting-skillscorresponding rarity.
  • Potency Improvement (9 tiers): Allow you to use more Potency Runes to craft glyphs that fit higher item levels. You can spend a point in this for every 5 levels of Enchanting (1, 5, 10, 15, 20, 25, 30, 35, 40). You must continue to spend points in this if you want to level up your enchanting skills.
  • Keen Eye: Rune Stones (3 tiers): Allow you to see rune stones from 20, 30, and 40m away. I personally only use the 20m version as I feel the additional 30m/40m are not that useful.
  • Hireling (3 tiers): When you go offline, a Hireling will gather Runestones (~3) for you every 24 hrs. Handy to have for additional runes.
  • Aspect Extraction (3 tiers): Increase the change of extracting Aspect Runestones by 5/10/15%. Aspect extraction comes in handy when you craft/deconstruct epic/legendary glyphs.

Addons

There are only two addons that are of use at this time.

  • Enchanter: It will look through your inventory/bank when you open up an enchanting table and tell you what glyphs you can make and what runes are needed. It only tell you the exact Essence Runes and you have to figure out what Potency and Aspect Runes to pair.

  • HarvestMap: Whenever you gather a node, it will mark it on your map. Very handy if you like to go back to a previously visited area and grab some much needed materials.

    Monumental is actually “Splendid”. I’ve heard of Monumental glyphs being world-dropped, but they are less than, or equal to, crafted level 9 potency “Splendid” glyphs.

    Just for example, the droped “Monumental” magicka armor glyph (V10-V10) provides 78 Magicka (better than the Jejota Potency 9, but worse than the Denata version)

  • Feuersturm

    I find keen eyes 3 very useful for all resources (I actually find keen eyes 1 for runestones rather useless since those glow anyway)
    Why is that so?
    Because with riding across the landscape, you see resources from a distance instead of when u already passed them.
    Also, anyone who knows that “pickup a node, get on the horse, see next node nearby, get off the horse again to pick up that node”, this is pretty much over with keen eyes 3, since u see all nodes within “sprinting distance”.

  • Gonodir

    At the Potency runes section, it says ‘Subjective category’ where it should be ‘Subtractive category’. Also, in ‘VR10 Glyphs and their effects’, there’s a section ‘Jewelery Glyphs’. Other than that, it’s a very nice guide and very comprehensive.

  • Level 35 Enchanter

    I’ve seen a ton of these enchanting guides on the net, but this is by-far the most thorough I’ve found. Thanks for going beyond the basics and really spelling out the answers what even the advance enchanters were still seeking to know. Those tables are super helpful!
