SWTOR Bioware on West Coast Server Move to East Coast Datacenter

Bioware explains some of the issues and reasons for moving west coast servers to east coast datacenter.

Maintenance: October 24th, 2017 | 10.24.2017, 05:36 PM

Hi all,

Today’s maintenance was part of the United Forces effort!

We have completed the upgrade of the Game Servers along with all their supporting infrastructure in the Data Centers. We made a large investment of new hardware and software and one of our primary goals was to substantially reduce our footprint while improving our overall server capacity. During our evaluation of the new servers, we determined we could also combine our North American datacenters. That also occurred today and we have officially moved out of our West Coast location. Our testing showed no impact on the gameplay experience, but we expect some of you playing on formerly West Coast servers may see higher ping times. We’ll use the next two weeks to smooth out any kinks and resolve any performance issues encountered.

You’ll see the same Servers today that you saw yesterday. They’re just running on new hardware and, some, in different locations. As announced previously the move to the five (5) new Servers will be on Wednesday, November 8, 2017. At that time all Game Servers and the SWTOR website will be down for up to 12 hours. We’ll let you know the actual start time a few days before.

Report any specific issues you encounter to Customer Service as we’ve established an escalation process for critical issues. Please be a bit patient with us over the coming weeks as we unite players from a variety of servers and try to make this a smooth and painless process for everyone.

Cheers!

-Keith–

Hey folks,

As many of you know, on Tuesday Keith explained that in preparation for United Forces we moved all current west coast servers into our Virginia data center. Here’s some of the key questions we have received about the North American datacenter change:

Why not communicate this ahead of time?
We made the decision to not communicate this information ahead of time because we wanted you to have the ability to immediately login and determine the impact to your gameplay experience. This meant we could quickly start gathering feedback on what you were seeing in-game (more on this in the next question). However, we have seen posts from players who made specific decisions based on location (such as character transfers) and we will be in touch with them to discuss. To ensure there is no confusion about this update in-game, we adjusted the server selection screen to reflect that all NA servers are on the east coast.

My ping has gone up since the change and it is affecting my gameplay, what options do I have?
Please continue to report it! As Keith mentioned in his forum post this is something we are actively tracking and working with our network partners to address where possible. We will be working through this especially over the next two weeks as we ramp up to United Forces.

Could there be one data center in the Central US so that pings are more even for each coast?
Creating an entirely new datacenter is a daunting task, even above and beyond the substantial changes we have already made this year. This just isn’t something that was viable in the scope of the changes we made for United Forces.

Since all of NA is in one datacenter, shouldn’t we just have one server?
Moving all of NA together would create a very heavily populated server. This would introduce several challenges: 1) Players would likely experience queues accessing the server and 2) It would increase the chances for server instability and downtime. There are also a variety of other issues, but a key concern was combining all of North America would result in substantially more character name collisions.

We hope this answers some of your questions and lets you know what’s going to happen over the next couple weeks. Please remember, on November 8th we will move all players to their new servers during an extended maintenance (currently looking like 12 hours). We are also discussing starting a few hours earlier than usual (e.g., 2 or 3am CT), but will let you know a few days beforehand.

Thanks everyone.

  • BobbyOrr

“but will let you know a few days beforehand”

    but will they?

    • Brian Hudson

      lol probably not

    • Havik79

They have been pretty good putting up the info in the launcher.

Won’t be a problem for us Aussies, you Americans think its bad, its allot worse for us, I did Iokath dailies yesterday on my sniper in 230 gear with level 20 comp healer and almost died from lag spikes, it often went to 1k pings, one blew out to 16k, its pretty much unplayable now.

      • Rompe Himself

^^ Which is why most APAC players moved to Harbs or B.C. when the APAC servers were closed down. The West Coast servers were more friendly to APAC players compared to the terrible lag spikes on any East Coast server. Guess APAC players can now forget playing SWTOR anymore unless they want to ride the lag train.

“Our testing showed no impact on the gameplay experience, but we expect
some of you playing on formerly West Coast servers may see higher ping
times. We’ll use the next two weeks to smooth out any kinks and resolve
        any performance issues encountered.”

Given the legendary LACK of “testing” and QA by BW Austin, their tests should be disregarded straight away. And if they did an actual test, it would have been someone playing on the west coast, logging into east. Anyone outside of America can get fucked according to BW Austin, you don’t exist.

Yet another stupid decision and one by stealth by BW Austin. Harbs was the most populated server for a reason (APAC and all west coast Americans being there). Now the population is going to take another major hit and this time, it has nothing to do with lack of content.

Good going Bioware. Run out of nails yet or you dumb fucks still finding room on SWTOR’s coffin?

      • PB

Yup, APAC customers considered acceptable losses, apparently. 250-300 ping + spikes for Harb was bad enough.

    • AbnerDoon

They obviously meant a few days afterhand.

      • Haha yes… Swtor’s Eaware Fk’ers.. :/ Someone need to make a good blog post about all this crappy community Treatment & share it around. I hope someone does & then gives the link on this page 🙂

  • Haggard

    In other words…

“Screw you west coasters, we need to cut losses and you’re the ones that will have to deal with it!”

I always played on east coast server, but I feel bad for people used to play with pings around ~20 having to deal with an increase.
Not that it looks like much, but I take into comparison my situation… I play on EC with around 150 ms (yeah, I’m from Brazil, that’s why) and whenever I went to the WC servers to check GTN, I had pings around the 200~250 ms, which is bearing the unplayable for me.
Anyways, not the very same case here, but still.

  • Amodin

The reasons given for not announcing it has to be the biggest pile o’ stuff they could come up with as an excuse. There is absolutely NO logic to that, whatsoever.

    • Rompe Himself

Yet read the forum thread there and enjoy the EAWare plants on the forums trying to defend this outright lie by saying that BW Austin never EXPLICITLY said they would keep East and West and that it is in fact the player base fault for thinking that. Even the Fanboi’s have to outright bullshit now to defend the bullshit by BW Austin. Major inception bullshitting going on right there lol.

      • AbnerDoon

Oh I agree been dealing with them since Tuesday. White knights telling how they play every day with 300-400ms and it is perfectly fine. Or that BW will be able to tweak the connections that are now on the other side of the country. https://uploads.disquscdn.com/images/13007bb123aea8743d4ce6e4908aeea68a4de4152a574ad23d3c256487634b86.gif

        • Paulo Gomes

They never set foot in a NiM Op if they play with that ping. Or played pvp and won, for that matter…

          • AbnerDoon

Agreed once you hit mid 200’s to 300 you become that a-hole that ports all over the map in GSF and PVP.

If you play at this lag and think you are a great player please know that the entire opposing team is going WTF HAX!

            • Paulo Gomes

I’m always that guy. I play with 50 to 60 ms, and every single time I tried to pvp I was hopeless looooool. People shouting “GRASS!” “SNOW!”… And I didn’t know what the hell they were talking about. Had to ask a guildie that was pretty good at pvp what it was loooooool!

No, my “thang” was raiding. That I could do pretty well. And with 400 ms you WILL have a hard time playing Ops. Not impossible, but your dps will be substantially lower.

  • AbnerDoon

The writings on the wall they understand there will be losses in subs and they have ruled them acceptable. They will recoup enough in savings from the servers in the same location and the whales that remain.

Honestly the only thing happening in two weeks is the full server merge. They aren’t going to touch connections before then.

    • Rompe Himself

Personally I love how they continue to bullshit and say they got new hardware for the server merge. That cracks me up.

  • Fred Garvin

“We made the decision to not communicate this information ahead of time because we wanted you to have the ability to immediately login and determine the impact to your gameplay experience. This meant we could quickly start gathering feedback on what you were seeing in-game “

Oh, fuck you. What a blatant lie. That first fAnybody want to keep saying these guys are one of you and should be given a break because they really are good people who want the best for the game?

    • Paulo Gomes

Too many lies in very close succession. This stinks really bad, I hope it’s not a sign of the end of days for this game…

      • Fred Garvin
      • Rompe Himself

I can honestly say as much as I loved the game (past tense because the current version of SWTOR is an abomination of what it once was), I actually want to see the game just die already. At this point, it would be a mercy killing for SWTOR to be finally put down, rather then BW Austin to continue to behave and treat not only the game, but the remaining players as it has these past 2-3 years.

        • Same. I have really great memories of SWTOR, back in the first 2 years of the game’s lifespan.. but now it’s laughably bad. This is one of the rare instances in gaming (in my experience) where the most negative criticism isn’t hyperbolic, but well deserved.

      • Shawn Hargrave

i hope it is die tor!! i hope they all lose their jobs and end up working at wendys where they belong.

    • Rompe Himself

      https://uploads.disquscdn.com/images/781628183351f82bbb68a4ce5e50cf2acdce3c087d0080ac380c6199f8c3819b.jpg

Will we get Jiinx or Abaddonsmummy’s p.o.v. on this and all the other dodgy decisions and blatant lies BW Austin are rolling out? I would love to see how anyone could spin this shit into gold.

    • Paulo Gomes

Remember how we were going around in another post about the Galactic Command buff, that it smelled so much like shit but we couldn’t prove it?

Oh, this is what I love about liars. One day, one fucking day they are going to slip up and get called on their bullshit. Caught with their pants down.

And the beauty of it is that I don’t even have to state an opinion. No, I have their own words to be held accountable.

Feast your eyes on this, published on the second day of October, in the by now infamous Roadmap Update:

      https://uploads.disquscdn.com/images/87b13f048ccd5fb3ef0569506a370807b9beb62eba20712263757d6b90d96c80.jpg

Gotcha suckers. This is not a lie by omission. It’s a lie. PERIOD. Unless you say East Coast and West Coast are the same thing. This sort of thing doesn’t happen overnight. It was in the works, and THEY KNEW IT. Didn’t put it on the Roadmap, or made any mention of it.

      • AbnerDoon

Agreed but try calling it on the forums and every white knight pops out and calls it an omission. Blah, blah, blah your fault for reading what you wanted out of it etc…

Been dealing with those types since Tuesday. Honestly I give up on them. So much more open communication right? Keith drops an update then goes into hiding. Or gives us info and Musco or Boyd come out saying something else and he was mistaken.

        • Paulo Gomes

Yeah, I read one of these guys on the swtor forum saying it was a misunderstanding… Sure, ’cause you pack up your stuff and move to a server ON THE OTHER SIDE OF THE COUNTRY by a misunderstanding. And it’s not like, I don’t know… That was not scheduled for MONTHS in advance.

This is the reason I stopped subscribing man. Too many “lies by omission”. I don’t believe in coincidences. Maybe once or twice. But this many??? No, I have no reason to trust these people with my money. I don’t care if it’s Star Wars. I stopped at the “one year without Ops” lie. I gave them one year of my money dissatisfied. ONE YEAR. That was enough for me.

I hope they keep paying these liars. And buying their packs. This is the third server merge, as long as I can recall. They may even do one more: one for the US, one for Europe. After that it’s lights out. Say goodbye to all your 60$ lightsabers, because we’re closing shop. Bye now, thx for all your money…

          • AbnerDoon

They have my $15 sub right now because I wanted a few items and decos from the last couple packs. It was cheaper to sub and spend all those creds rotting in my escrow. I will not buy CC’s from them and haven’t bought packs or crates since they took away reputation from them.

I could have left that at 30 days and gone back into preferred status. But I foolishly saw the server merge notes and wanted a chance at hanging onto names.

If it wasn’t for my guildies this game would be uninstalled. My sub doesn’t end until mid to late December now. At that point I have to decide whether to stick around as preferred. Or free myself of this chain and spread some holiday cheer to my guild mates that remain.

            • Paulo Gomes

That’s the redeeming factor: friends. As I’ve repeatedly said here, at one time I had two of my sons playing with me. If I had them and some other friends (some from my hometown, homies that went to high school with me) I would still be playing. I’d say the game sucks anyway, but sucking in good company is better.

But everyone’s gone. I had literally no friends online when I stopped playing. Sure, there were people I played with, but I didn’t have a steady group of people to play. All the cool guilds ceased to exist. The later days of my playing were done in a casual, weekend warrior kinda way. Didn’t even bother to PUG for FP’s, let alone Ops.

This game burned me for MMO’s. I started playing ESO. Left online gaming altogether shortly after. But I’ve been getting the bug again to log in and do some raiding. Wish it could be in a Star Wars environment, but I seriously doubt that.

          • Very well said… Wiuh so Swtor’s Eaware Crew have promised Ops per year at some point 😮 Darn.. That’s a big damn LIE then esp. now since going to be more than 2,5 years from having New Operation.. Of course understandable that new Ops won’t come like in next 8x months after prev. launched, but yeah to have new one like 9-12 months is what should happen in a Mmorpg.

Swtor stopped being Mmorpg long time ago & didn’t come back with the “Gods of the Machine” Ops cause released in slices. Crap Raid releasing in past years not only reason why it stopped being Mmorpg. Shame that Eaware didn’t understand to take off that word from advertisements / banners.

      • Fred Garvin

They’ve been lying for a long time. It started heavy when they pretended they brought HK back as a companion because of that vote they did with players shortly after the launch of KotFE. That was planned from the beginning and the vote was rigged because HK was the only choice in the poll who had been given some real character before getting “killed.”

        • Yes indeed & also lied about “Gods of the Machine” Operation development being rdy by end of 2017. Seems that only 3 out of 5 Ops Bosses & environment will be done by end of this year. Only Force knows how long remaining 2x encounters are in development. Maybe final encounter comes by end of March 2018. Then Swtor’s Eaware Crew would own the title: “Slowest Mmo Raid Developing Team” cause literally 2,5 + Years development time for a Raid. So damn sad..

Then all this servers wiping cause of vanished population that has happened bc several reasons. Lack of Content, Removing Ops & Pvp Passes, using Paywall at so called endgame, Rng looting brought back after several years “was in 1.0, but removed by vanilla crew” & some other reasons. Other companies need to hear about this ridiculousness stated by Swtor’s Eaware.

Calling simple Servers Merging an Expansion / Content. It’s truly 2 damn weird how they can pat their shoulders & brush away the vanished population thought while typing about this “United Forces” linked to Merging servers.

    • Translation: We didn’t want to tip you off in advance because we knew the feedback would be overwhelmingly negative, but we went ahead and did it anyway.

  • Disqus this

It’s not very often I’m lied to so bluntly.

Thanks for showing your true form bioware.
Now I actually do hope EA fully consumes you and does away with you like visceral. bioware has now crossed a particular line I cannot accept. Lying straight to an entire region of gamers.

WTF. OH and way to wait 2 days before getting this information out Dulfy. What? You thought there was some silver lining waiting to happen on bioware end? You lose some credibility as well.

    • Rompe Himself

      https://uploads.disquscdn.com/images/2f5ae1dee6ad909a2bfc71c0a9a19f5b5908a33ef0bb19afd966102f6acdf9ba.jpg

At the risk of sounding like a White Knight (My post history should tell
you I am the least possible candidate to be one lol), I personally
cannot fathom how you put any blame on Dulfy for this fuck up by BIOWARE
      AUSTIN.

Don’t want to speak for Dulfy, but I can think of
several reasons why Dulfy didn’t report it the minute Musco spewed forth
yet another helping of bullshit onto the decimated and abused SWTOR
      population:

      * This server data center change was not mentioned on
the official SWTOR twitter account, unlike so many other announcements
by those fuckwits at BW Austin, like the recent give away of SOR. So if
she waits for info to come from Twitter, then the following could cause
      said delay:

      * She didn’t realise until she went to log in (Dulfy
is a Harbs player) and saw it say East Coast and thought WTF like
everyone else and went investigating. I cannot imagine given the other
games Dulfy covers and the lack of new fresh content in SWTOR, that she
would have need to log in outside of raid nights etc.

      * Or maybe
since SWTOR is such a joke these last few years with its pitiful
content, Dulfy has more focus on the other games she covers that, you
know, actually has CONSTANT NEW CONTENT. And here is the zinger: Games
like that (with new content) takes time to play and create
guides/walkthroughs for. And perhaps someone sent her a message about
the server merge and hence the delayed post about it.

What’s that?? Regular new content?? Yeah I know, what the fuck is that right??? 😛

      • Disqus this

I expect a swtor site to post what is currently going on. Seems a bit odd it took two days to get this out there and not sit on it. She loses a bit of credibility to me for that move.

You act like Dulfy doesn’t have her finger on the pulse of this game and others. This was big news and waiting on it for two days is a move that hurt her credibility to me.

    • Paulo Gomes

Not to rain on your parade man. But Dulfy is a raider. She doesn’t post very much, but I remember at the beginning of the Kot** debacle she did post that she logged in to raid. Period. I don’t think she’s looking for a silver lining anywhere lol. She is probably just as disappointed with the game as most of us are. But she has to keep her distance.

Other than that, I think Rompe Himself himself (see what I did there???) explained it very logically bellow…

  • Don Loco

Now if anyone still believe this bullshit….just wow. Rarely have a seen a company just utterly hose on their player base and have the balls to call it rain. Much like the government here in the US, 99.99% of the time their lips are moving, they are lying.

  • MTCason

THANK YOU, Bioware! I’m sure for some people this is inconvenient but as someone on the East Coast who plays on Harbinger and regularly has to deal with high ping spikes this is a welcome change.

    • Rompe Himself

I am curious. Why, if you were already on the East Coast, would you not use an East Coast server? Population lacking on East Coast servers compared to Harbs?

      • MTCason

No server has the population of Harbinger which is important to me only in respect to the GTN. I do a lot of buying/selling and what may take hours on other servers to get a nibble will sell out within seconds of posting it on Harbinger.

    • Eban

For all the angry ranters and fanboys that complain about comments on here and don’t speak about actual issues they know they can’t defend, I would ask you to look at the above comment.
^ That is a troll comment.
Go on SWTOR forums and its 23 pages of angry subscribers with zero people thanking them that this is a good thing, come on Dulfy and you get this guy.
It’s going to be interesting to see who up votes him, I’m sure we could guess a few names.

      • MTCason

Because it makes things better for me, I’m a troll? No. I’m giving the other side of the coin. This isn’t a bad move for everyone or even necessarily for a majority.

        • Matrim

” If you are, from all Bioware has said you should have no significant lag issues even after the move.”
That would’ve been so true if it wasn’t BW you are talking about. Those dickheads constantly lie, screw up, don’t test, ignore when people point out their wrongs, and yet you still think that just because some BW retard has said it then it is the holy truth? Dude, those fucktards don’t even play their own game, they have no idea what is happening there! They make nerfs (sorry, I will not call it balance) based on tests on a fricking dummy! And you think that this ping story will be any different? Probably Keith the janitor is testing the ping from his dad’s basement and just because that is also where the servers are, he doesnt experience any ping and he thinks the whole players community also doesn’t experience it.
I’m pretty sure you’ve read the forum. There were at least 12 pages of people complaining of way higher ping than they’ve ever experienced. And that was on Wednesday, I haven’t checked it since. But sure… maybe all those people are lying, because if BW says they should have no significant lag issues, then of course it is true! So much eyerolling, seriously

          • MTCason

50-100 ping isn’t ‘way higher’. That’s minimal and still within optimal gaming conditions.

        • Eban

This is a bad move for the MAJORITY on the West Coast players and those who played on the old APAC servers since about what 99% of them do NOT live on the east coast like you!

Bioware didn’t announce ahead of time because they knew for a fact it would upset people but they are cost cutting so it was going ahead regardless of feedback (don’t blame negative feedback for their mistakes).

”Bioware has said you should have no significant lag issues even after the move” Are you insane?
Have you seen how they implement patches and maintenance in the past? Their track record is awful to put it politely.

Like the Matrim said there’s 12 pages of people with twice the lag time they had before this stunning move, so what’s your excuse for that?
They all lying or is Bioware full of shit?

P.S. your OP was a troll comment, placed here to defend another Bioware screw up.

          • MTCason

Twice the lag? Most of those reports are of MINIMAL latency. Not even enough to reduce the in-game graphic from four bars to three! Not enough to impact PvE or PvP combat.

            • Eban

              What?
You’re now arguing that the lag that these people are complaining about is not bad enough to be affecting their enjoyment of the game?
Yeah you’re not a troll at all ffs

        • Paulo Gomes

Why is it that every single time people point out what’s wrong they are blowing things out of proportion?

When we came out and said KotFE was a bad, bad move, we were “blowing things out of proportion”. That turned out well…

When we said GC was a bad move, we were “blowing things out of proportion”. Even BioWare say that GC is a controverse issue. No shit Sherlock?

Now they mess up again, and it’s “out of proportion” again… Boy, you fanbois really have to start digging deeper for those excuses…

And who are YOU to say we don’t have a say in the matter? Hey, we haters care more about this game than YOU! All you can see is your own little world, where everything is perfume and roses, because now you can sell your shit faster on Harbinger…

Man, you are the perfect picture of what’s wrong in our society. A paragon of mediocrity. Not the majority of players you say? Well, scroll down swtor’s OFFICIAL forum. You’ll see people from the West Coast, Australia, South Africa complaining.

I hope you’re right man, I really do. I hope we are all blowing things out of proportion, and BioWare is going to transcend the laws of physics to solve those problems.

You see, I STILL care about this game. These last few years have been a penance to me, seeing inane people BUTCHERING the work of the once great BioWare. Because make no mistake: BioWare is just a plaque on some building somewhere. The people responsible for making what this game STILL has of greatness are long gone…

          • MTCason

You’re assuming that I’m fine with everything going on with SWTOR. I’m not. I loved KOTFE, and I think MOST players did. The problem was, they changed courses drastically with KOTET. After getting us used to regular, monthly infusions of new content they’ve returned to only rolling out meaningful additions a few times a year. I felt the monthly schedule worked far better and smaller but more scheduled content helped the game’s player numbers much more than months of silence. So yes, I have issues with the way SWTOR is being managed now. But not when it comes to datacenters, nope. That is such an insignificant, unimpactful facet and you’re blowing it completely out of proportion. Again I ask, where are the reports of massive latency spikes? Where is the data to show this is having a negative effect upon anyone’s gameplay? Folks are complaining simply for the sake of complaining which is what Internet forums have become with this thankless, selfish, utterly unrealistic generation we are fostering now. If there’s any myopic viewpoint in this situation it’s yours, not mine.

            • Paulo Gomes

As we’ve repeatedly stated: go to swtor.com. There’s PLENTY of reports of people that have had their game experience severely degraded. I haven’t, I must confess. Logged in for the first time in a long time, and my connection is the same it has always been since I found a proper ISP. Steady 50 to 60 ms.

There are even people who are NOT unhappy with the game that are going to unsub because their game has become unplayable. Not my words, mind you. Theirs.

And this is not one of those issues where people would lie about unsubbing. I mean, either they are happy with the quality of service, or they’re not. Why would a subscriber claim to have a degraded game experience if he’s NOT having a degraded game experience??? This is not some frantic rant over a nerf of your favourite FOTM adv class…

And again I say: I hope you’re right and that the company can solve those problems. It’s not like the game can afford to lose any more players. Last night went to the Fleet. And this is on The Red Eclipse, the most populated European server. Roughly 160 people online. I remember, not so long ago, 3 instances of 170+plus, on average. And this is Saturday, after dinner time, around 9 o’clock PM GMT +1.

              • Matrim

That guy is a gem. First he praises bw for screwing many peoples pings but making his own ping good. Then several people point out the many pages of complains and he brushes it off with “100 more ping isnt a problem” (and that after he himself admitted in his original post he has been having big lag spikes) and “show me where the complaints are” (after we kept telling him to check swtor forum). Epic eyeroll right there!

            • Jeremy Reed

This is the most bullshit fanboying I’ve seen. Saying secretly increasing up to half the games populations ping significantly is blowing things out of proportion is a joke. You are the problem and why BW thinks this shit is ok.

    • Shawn Hargrave

until the next server merge down to 1 server

      • Paulo Gomes

        And after that… No server…

  • mrrabbit

The fact that the East Coast datacenter is now “SWTOR Central” suggests what is likely to come next:

Moving EU servers to the East Coast datacenter as well.

I would not be surprised if EA/Bioware tries to sneak this in.
This would be the wet dream of the bean counter from accounting calling all the shots.

    =8-(

    • Vixzer

The sad thing is that you are quite correct, there is someone calling the shots and it is a bean counter from accounting transvestite in a sumptuous name as director or manager of something or other

    • Adam Haynes

Mr Rabbit! This is Adam from Insane Force… I’ll be on tonight. Hopefully see you there!

  • Booya

I feel very sad for all people living in APAC regions that are still serious about the game and WANT to still enjoy the game and Bioware just straight out tells them:
“Fuck you, we don’t want you anymore”.

In addition to that I can’t take all those lies anymore and them only delivering the full truth at the very last second in hopes to keep as many people in the game to cash on them as much as possible before leaving.

It just shows how Eaware doesn’t care about their own customers at all. Sure this is business and it is about the money, but i have never seen such disgusting behaviour, where it is only about numbers.

    • Rompe Himself

To be fair to BW Austin (yeah I know wtf right?), BW Austin have been giving EVERYONE the giant middle finger for years. This is just the first time they have been so blatant about it.

  • Ben Gimson

  • Paulo Gomes

    Omg…

I have a personal history of criticising this game. Always trying to do it constructively, sometimes missing that mark. I know.

But it’s getting harder and harder to do that. What is this shit? Why move a West server East? I’m located in Europe, but I fail to see the logic in this. Does this not make it TWO East servers??? Help me out here, is there something I’m not grasping???

But more importantly: why withhold that information? Come on Keith, isn’t this the “new” BioWare? You know, where you have “better” communication with the players?

So let me get this perfectly clear:

You thought that this was not an important piece of information to pass on to your PAYING CUSTOMERS??? That this way they would, and I quote, “have the ability to immediately login and determine the impact to your gameplay experience”???

As I’ve stated in a previous thread, and will do so again: BETTER COMMUNICATION MY ASS.

This is the worst lie I have ever read from you guys. And here I was, not long ago, thinking about resuming my sub and try out some of the little content you have put out. Yeah right. I’m gonna check ESO’s “Clockwork” instead.

At least they know how to run a triple A MMO…

    • ESO has only two servers, US and Europe. Somehow they manage a massive population of characters. Sure, every once in a blue moon I see a login queue, but they never last much more than 30 seconds. And the landscape is positively brimming with live characters and not just a scant population of NPCs.

Sure, ESO isn’t perfect (simplified combat, etc.). But they seem to be much smarter at elder game (CP system), housing, crafting, and … oh, yeah, pushing frequent updates with compelling PVE and PVP content for solo and group players.

BioWare Austin could learn a thing or two from Zenimax.

      • Rompe Himself

Simple reason is that Zenimax invested in good servers from the start. SWTOR was always hampered by not only the beta version of the hero engine but also the shit quality of the servers Bioware chooses to run this game off.

        • Paulo Gomes

Which is another dent in their claims that they are “investing” in better hardware.

First: unless BW are going to redefine the laws of physics many clients will haver a higher ping.

Second: if other companies have one server only it’s possibly because they have one mega-server to cope with demand. If these guys can’t do it properly with TWO servers and decreasing population I doubt they “invested” in first grade material in the first place…

          • True……………. :/

          • Shawn Hargrave

Why didnt they have better hardware in the first place? Shows they were being cheapasses

    • Лев Сафаров
    • Rompe Himself

Spot on as always Paulo. So can all those mindless, utterly idiotic retard fanboi defenders of Keith kindly step forward and remind us again how you think BW Austin is communicating with the community once more? Because from where I am sitting, it looks like things under Ben were far better then the shit under Keith.

    • Matrim

I have stockpiled a LOT of popcorns for Nov 8th in anticipation of their amazing, great, superb, wonderfull new expansion/content called “servers merge”. Some friends and I have placed bets on how long after the announced maintenance time the servers will still be shut down, and how much items, names, etc personal things will most of the players lose between transfering. Should be one great day for BW communication™

      • Fred Garvin

I took off the 3rd for BlizzCon. I should extend my weekend through the 8th because you’re right; this should be one hell of an entertaining exercise in buffoonery. Start the weekend watching a company at the top of its game announce their next expansion (after their last one routinely has patches with more content than an entire SWTOR “expansion”) and finish watching another company trip over its giant clown shoes.

Also, did you play on Jedi Covenant? I think I remember someone in my guild there had the name Matrim.

        • Matrim

No, Im on the Red Eclipse. And sadly that name was taken there so my alts have other names, but I quite like the character so I used his name when signing up here.

      • Yeah.. Ppl should take screenies from their Personal & Legacy Hold Tabs before that fine Servers Merge Content / Expansion begins. It’s just unbelievably Mind Boggling how some Company can be so stupid to call Servers Merge as Content.. 😀 *slaps head* 😛 #Brainstorm

    • gog

Clockwork City is AMAZING! Main story is fun, especially the latter half which had me laughing a lot, and the environments are really cool. Plus, some of the QoL fixes are pretty sweet.

As for the topic, well lol and what did we expect?

    • Syraht36

The biggest line of shit in his post is they will work on ping issues. There isn’t shit they can do for a Aus players or west coast who saw an increase. Keith is saying we deceived you now eat a bag of dicks your loyalty and sub for years doesn’t mean shit to us.

  • CrumpetTrumpet

    Oh, so that’s why… 🙁

  • Deewe

    BioFail™ to its best.

    Truly saddening.

Guess I wasted my time though made sure to send an email to EA CEO awilson@ea.com.
Best thing that could happen is for him to get flooded with emails of unsatisfied customers.

    • Rompe Himself

Best thing for him to do is kill BW Austin once and for all and maybe by extension Bioware as well as they are no longer the BW we all once loved. Lord knows BW Austin deserve to be shut down and all the useless fucks left there be fired far more then the guys at Visceral did.

      • SO DAMN TRUE.. Damn EA’s Half Blind Suits for putting down Visceral.. Hopefully Amy Hennig raises Hell for what they did… People need to write to Amy & encourage her to do that..

  • Shawn Hargrave

how do you guys take this game seriously? Wheres the fanbois lolz i thought tors sub numbers were skyrocketing? battlefront is even worse with the microtransactions were totally fucked for star wars games .

    • Rompe Himself

Yup, I have also noticed the fanbois are becoming rarer and rarer in defending BW Austin. The only place I see them now are the EAWare plants in the swtor.com forums.

Could it be that even the last diehards are starting to wake up? Still waiting to hear from this website’s resident defenders of BW Austin in Darth Jiinx and Abaddonsmummy. Or maybe as I said previously, this is finally something that no one can defend and explain considering BW Austin outright lied and bullshitted (again).

      • dookie

too busy stroking off to the rehashed “upcoming content™”. see relevant thread.

      • Shawn Hargrave

Ive seen 2 left who wore themselves out raging at me lol on another thread had one so mad he responded last week to a 5 month old thread lmao. Names are guiremo and bob those 2 tools are latch ons till the end

      • Fred Garvin

Go check out the latest post about the Cartel Market. They are all over there jerking off over the latest outfits and ugly lightsaber colors they’re going to get from hyper crate purchases. You don’t need a good ping to ERP in your stronghold…lol.

        • Shawn Hargrave

          Hahaha

    • Drivan

Yeah, Mummy and the gang haven’t been heard from in month. Weird how when all the shit we have been talking about starts happening the fanboi’s scatter like roaches.

  • Sorrai

What I don’t understand, especially now that all servers are being hosted on the East Coast, is why they didn’t merge servers together that already had similar server cultures? Begeren Colony was the west coast RP server. Shouldn’t it have been merged with Ebon Hawk, which was the east coast RP server? At least all the players with similar interests could share the same server.

  • Fred Garvin

“Eric, bet you can’t craft a post that’ll con these fools on the forums to praise us for this server move we lied our asses off about.”

    “Watch me bruh!”

  • Adam Haynes

Speaking of name collisions, when are they going to explain how these are resolved and are they ever going to delete the non-players to free up names? I’m also hoping for some choice in legacy names not just random chosen when 3 level 50 legacies collide. Also and probably most importantly are they going to offer free legacy renames and transfers for the inevitable frustrating loss of a name?

    • I doubt about the “free” parts mentioned on your comment.. Cause EA Overlords forbid their Suffering Minions “Eaware & the rest who unfortunately work for them” for accepting that “Free” word.

  • Just Left the Game

Strange… Eve Online has only ever had one server with a population exceeding 10,000 logged-in players at any one time. Neverwinter only has one server, admittedly per platform, but still that’s one server (per platform) with a big population. Both MMOs have their strengths and weaknesses… and VERY annoying micro-transactions. However, they seem to be doing right what EA/Bioware is somehow failing miserably to pull off. How is that possible?

Come on, folks! Doesn’t Star Wars deserve better than this Keystone Cops approach?

    • Shawn Hargrave

Its ea need i say more

      • True that… 😀 :/ #MindBoggled #Brainstorm

  • I just want to know why the hell I can’t log in immediately. I’m being placed in a queue…

    • Syok

Have you paid for your subscription already? They have your money, no need to care about you as player.

  • Senor Taco

I live in North America but my main raid guild is heavily Aussie based. I just do not fucking understand this at all. They know they have APAC players on Harbinger ever since they got rid of the Asia-Pacific servers and they still do this shit. Honestly APAC players have little difference at this point in terms of ping, I would imagine, playing on Harbinger or on one of the Euro servers like Red Eclipse. The fuck are they doing? I get wanting to centralize shit but this is just moronic. A West Coast server should be someplace like San Fran, San Diego, Seattle, etc. Not in goddamn Virginia. Also for reference I logged in after hearing this to see the damage. My ping used to be in the 30’s or 40’s. It’s now in the 80’s to 100’s.

Plain and simply put this is a cost saving measure painted out as a positive. I get trying to reduce costs but something like this, done in this way, screams out that they’re going to slowly kill off this game pretty soon. A big server merge to repopulate, move all servers to a central location for easy cheap maintenance, drip feeding of content that they cannot for the life of them hold established deadlines on, and so on. Honestly with how far down the tube this game has gone it cannot come soon enough. I really hope Disney doesn’t renew with EA when their deal is done and instead shops this license out to a company that isn’t a complete sack of shit or better yet re-establishes LucasArts in some way, shape, or form.

The thing that irks me about this is they didn’t tell anybody. At all. They just did this. They didn’t test it. They didn’t inform their paying customers and let them know their experience might be shit. They just hid behind a veil of “server updates” and then when it was done dropped yuge, “So yeah guys, everything is based in Virginia now. Let us know if it’s fucked although we can’t do anything to fix it because it’s done already. LoL!” Whatever. I uninstalled literally 15 minutes ago after having it just sitting on my system for awhile now. Fuck this game. That 30 or so GB could be used on some good high quality porn.

  • Syok

    I will translate.

“We made the decision to not communicate
this information ahead of time because we wanted you to have the ability
to immediately login and determine the impact to your gameplay
experience. This meant we could quickly start gathering feedback on what
you were seeing in-game (more on this in the next question).”

Translation: we already know we made a dumb decision, everyone would be against it so we didn’t ask for your opinion. We were afraid we’d have to change our decision. IT’S NOT EA GAME IT’S BW GAME RESPECT OUR AUTHORITAH

“Please continue to report it! As Keith
mentioned in his forum post this is something we are actively tracking
and working with our network partners to address where possible. We will
be working through this especially over the next two weeks as we ramp
    up to United Forces.”

Translation: please, report your high ping, so customer service can reply with automatic response “we are working on it”.

“Creating an entirely new datacenter is a
daunting task, even above and beyond the substantial changes we have
already made this year. This just isn’t something that was viable in the
scope of the changes we made for United Forces.”

Translation: oi, mate, it takes us 2 years to finish whole operation and you want us to create a new datacenter? Lol mate, forget it, have you checked new stuff on cartel market?

“Moving all of NA together would create a
very heavily populated server. This would introduce several challenges:
    1) Players would likely experience queues accessing the server and 2) It
would increase the chances for server instability and downtime. There
are also a variety of other issues, but a key concern was combining all
of North America would result in substantially more character name
    collisions.”

Translation: we merge servers so we can make an illusion of game that is being played by many people. Few hundred people daily on fleet? ESO has few thousand people in Orsinium at the moment? So what! All you fanboys can say number of subs is skyrocketing, even though TOR-server clearly states we lost 60% of playerbase since 5.0!

    • Perfect! Thanks for this 🙂 This need to be put also to official Forums & everywhere under Swtor post <3 Then at forums screenie as proof & to see how long takes for Eaware to order jumpy add Musco to delete it.

      • Syok

I can’t post it, unfortunately. I am not subbed for few months now :p

        • jack diamond

Translation: Go fuck yourself, if your not gonna play the game don’t just come on and shitpost hate content and ruin it for people who just enjoy it.

BW pretty much shit on all West Coast and Accpac players. They don’t give a 2 fucks about their player base. This game should’ve been great but BW is a clueless studio they make Wildstar look good.

  • tanner vang

Agreed but try calling it on the forums and every white knight pops out and calls it an omission. Blah, blah, blah your fault for reading what you wanted out of it etc…Been dealing with those types since Tuesday. Honestly I give up on them. So much more open communication right? Keith drops an update then goes into hiding. Or gives us info and Musco or Boyd come out saying something else and he was mistaken.

    • Paulo Gomes

      The Bot Strikes Again…

      • abaddonsmummy

Haha lol I see what you mean, it starts with ‘agreed’.

  • sebastian wolff

    And after that… No server…

  • tyler moore

^^ Which is why most APAC players moved to Harbs or B.C. when the APAC servers were closed down. The West Coast servers were more friendly to APAC players compared to the terrible lag spikes on any East Coast server. Guess APAC players can now forget playing SWTOR anymore unless they want to ride the lag train.”Our testing showed no impact on the gameplay experience, but we expect some of you playing on formerly West Coast servers may see higher ping times. We’ll use the next two weeks to smooth out any kinks and resolve any performance issues encountered.”Given the legendary LACK of “testing” and QA by BW Austin, their tests should be disregarded straight away. And if they did an actual test, it would have been someone playing on the west coast, logging into east. Anyone outside of America can get fucked according to BW Austin, you don’t exist.Yet another stupid decision and one by stealth by BW Austin. Harbs was the most populated server for a reason (APAC and all west coast Americans being there). Now the population is going to take another major hit and this time, it has nothing to do with lack of content.Good going Bioware. Run out of nails yet or you dumb fucks still finding room on SWTOR’s coffin?

    • Paulo Gomes

The Bot Strikes Again – Part 2

At this time I’d like to point out to all those unaware that there is someone out there that likes to take one of our comments, says goodbye to all the punctuation (making it easier to mistake for his comment), copy it and post it as his own. This was originally posted by Rompe Himself, himself (hehehehe I love that one), way down bellow.

Come on man. We’d love to read about your feelings towards the game. You know, in your own words. Not someone else’s.

      • abaddonsmummy

Can’t think why someone would bother to do that man, maybe to fill the page with those ‘negative waves’ that White Dragon keeps Meme’ing at us.
Don’t know why as there is plenty on this topic from the looks of it. 🙂
I’m in the UK so not quite sure of the issue here but a quick scan tell’s me that before the East coast were getting a poorer service than West coast and now with the move that it’s the opposite?
        Am I right?
And the anger is most players here seem to be West Coast?

        • Paulo Gomes

I don’t really know man. The truth is that I logged in to the game this weekend to perform “preventive maintenance” (delete all my toons on all servers, except TRE) and my ping was as good as it’s always been.

The problem seems to be with people that used the West Coast server in the US. I’ve read reports of German players having a few problems, but the main problem seems to be with East Coast and APAC players. Us European players seem to be out of trouble for now…

        • Since I was on multiple servers, I think my experience was better on the West Coast than the East (although I live the East). Weird but true.

      • Factz

  • Since all of NA is in one datacenter, shouldn’t we just have one server?

Yeah because that would make since, all the queues would be poppin’ like old times and you would actually get to experience the MMO with (*GASP*) other people. Lately my armada of companions handle everything, except PvP.

  • Nananananananana Batman

Week later haven’t heard anything about what they’re doing to improve it or anything.

Knew this would happen. With a big new update coming out these pricks are just going to bury their heads in the sand and ignore it until the new update comes out knowing full well that this will just blow completely over. Absolutely fucking miserable.
