Cyberpunk 2077 Guns Overview Guide

This is a high level introduction to the guns in Cyberpunk 2077. If you are about to step into Cyberpunk 2077 or have just started your journey, this will help you understand the basics. There will be more detailed posts coming that will provide some more advanced information. If there is a tip I can provide when you first start off it is this: worry less about the DPS and more about how effective you are with the weapon type you choose. Don’t choose the shotgun because it is 1 DPS more than your assault rifle if you have been successful with the assault rifle. Early game is not difficult or dangerous.

There are 9 ranged weapon types and 3 weapon categories. You can think of a category as a behavior.

Weapon Categories

There are 3 weapon categories in Cyberpunk 2077. You can think of a category as a behavior. Each weapon has a single behavior. Early in the game this isn’t too important but later in the game you will want some variation.

  • Power Weapons – bullets can ricochet off surfaces and increase damage
  • Tech Weapons – bullets can pierce objects allowing you to shoot through walls and other obstacles
  • Smart Weapons – allow you to shoot around objects to hit your target

Weapon Types

There are 9 ranged weapon types.

  • Assault Rifles
  • Heavy Machine Guns
  • Light Machine Guns
  • Pistols
  • Precision Rifles
  • Shotguns
  • Sniper Rifles
  • Submachine Guns
  • Revolvers

Assault Rifles
Primary Attribute: Reflexes
Assault rifles come as either Power or Smart weapons and depending on the model it can fire in either full auto or three round burst. This is my recommended starting weapon as it is very forgiving.

Heavy Machine Gun
Primary Attribute: Body
The Heavy Machine Gun is a Power weapon and is obtained by ripping it out of turret or by taking it from an NPC. It cannot be stowed and as soon as you pick it up it becomes your active weapon. If you attempt to switch active weapons V will toss it to the ground. It only comes with a limited amount of ammo (300 rounds) and once that is used, you don’t get any more.

Light Machine Guns
Primary Attribute: Body
Light Machine Guns are a Power weapon that uses rifle ammo and has a high rate of fire. They have high recoil and are inaccurate but are great for clearing confined areas. They use rifle ammo.

Pistols
Primary Attribute: Reflexes
Pistols are semi-automatic and come in all three categories (power, tech, smart). There are a lot of iconic pistols in Night City with many unique characteristics. Pistols have a naturally low ADS (Aim Down Sights), which is the time it takes to put your sights on target, and can be further increased with a high ADS scope. The pistol is a great for close quarters combat.

Precision Rifles
Primary Attribute: Reflexes
Precision Rifles are semi-automatic and provide a bit more range and accuracy than assault rifles but less range and accuracy than sniper rifles. With a good scope the Precision rifle can be very effective at medium-long range. I personally use the Widowmaker extensively and highly recommend acquiring it! Precision Rifles come in two categories: power and tech.

Shotguns
Primary Attribute: Body
Shotguns are a great short range option that have the potential to knock down targets. There is a surprising amount of variety in shotguns and can be found with all three categories (power, tech, smart).

Sniper Rifles
Primary Attribute: Reflexes
Sniper Rifles are your long range option and can be found in all three categories (power, tech, smart). Their ADS (Aim Down Sights) can be slow so be sure to put a lot of distance between you and your target. The reload time can also be long without perk points spent into reload speed. However, if you can setup at a distance, you can be very effective and one shot many of Night Cities toughest enemies.

Submachine Guns
Primary Attribute: Reflexes
Submachine Guns have high APS (attacks per second) and come in either Power or Smart variants. While typically SMGs use a pistol round, in Cyberpunk 2077 they use rifle ammo which you can carry the most of. Due to the Submachine Gun’s high rate of fire, I would recommend spending perk points into reload speed because you’ll be reloading a lot.

Revolvers
Primary Attribute: Reflexes
Revolvers have slower APS (attacks per second) but each shot is more powerful. The revolver is a great option for players that are efficient at making headshots as the revolver gets a 2x headshot multiplier. Revolvers are fun but be patient and make each shot count!

Author’s Suggestion

Attribute points in Cyberpunk 2077 currently cannot be reset. If you plan to play with a Reflexes or Body build I would recommend using a ranged weapon that lines up with your primary attribute. Early in the game the enemies in Night City are quite forgiving and at time of this writing the AI is not too smart.

There are a lot of assault rifle, pistol and submachine gun drops early in the game as well and I would recommend initially focusing on one of them if you play a Reflexes build. If you are planning to play a Body build, your only early option is going to be shotguns.

When you get a new weapon drop to replace your old one, don’t forget to take your mods off of your weapon before you sell or disassemble it and place it on your new weapon.
