Continue reading »]]> Hey everyone, it is no secret that a lot of us spend our free time acquiring speeders to add to our collection. Having a nice ride is just as important as looking good. Standing in the middle of a crowded fleet and pulling out our cool speeders to admiring passerby is something we are all probably guilty of.

Recently, I was able to complete all 4 vehicle achievements introduced with patch 1.2 and I was disappointed to see that there are no updated catalogs of all the speeders available in the game. The existing catalogs are either filled with speeders that never even existed in-game or have crappy screenshots that doesn’t do the speeders justice. I took the time to obtain high res screenshots of all the speeders that are currently existing/existed on the live version of the game and organized speeders according to their family. It is my hopes that you will find it useful in starting your own collection or at least get a chance to look at some of the awesome speeders in their high resolution glory!

There are 48 speeders in existence as of patch 1.2. They are distributed into 14 families, 13 of which are currently obtainable (Korrealis family has being discontinued since 1.2). All members of the same family have same prefixes in their name and have similar looks (in some cases identical models swapped with a different skin).

Note that Ubrikkian War-rider is a new vehicle that currently exists in-game but not obtainable until ranked warzones are introduced. It will be listed here once it can be obtained.

Continue reading »]]> Hey everyone, I see quite a few questions daily on the swtor forums on how to obtain schematics for armormech and synthweaver crafted orange armor. With 1.3 coming out soonish adding boots and glove schematics to complete some of the existing orange sets, I thought this would be a good time to compile an easy to read/reference list for all the orange armor schematics that synthweavers/armormech can craft from Underworld Trading. Note that this list does not include the Battlemaster/War Hero/Campaign gear – schematics for those come from the PvP vendor or from REing (Campaign)

A word on obtaining the schematics

All of the schematics here can be obtained via Underworld Trading (or via the GTN). The level of the item will determine which rank of Underworld trading mission you need to run. Some of the schematics are faction/class specific so if you are an Empire player, you could get schematics for say Jedi Knight/Smuggler. UT rank in the schematics section below will tell you which rank of Underworld Trading Mission to run to get the schematic. Keep in mind that the type of mission does not have an influence on the schematic drop (i.e. running fabric missions won’t guarantee all synthweaver schematics).

Continue reading »]]> Hey everyone, this is the transcript for the MCM Expo SWTOR Panel from London with Emmanuel Lusinchi , which occurred on May 26. This panel covered a lot of stuff relating to patch 1.3 and if you prefer to watch it in person, you can find it here. (Gamespot Twitch TV).  

Summary of new things about 1.3 learned from this panel

• Permanent free trial starting in patch 1.3 – still restricted to a certain level
• Improved in-game tutorials for new players
• Performance optimizations for low-mid machines
• Allow you to link missions in chat
• Keep same original group after warzones
• Same faction Alderaan Civil war.
• Weekly missions to defeat world bosses
• Vote kick feature in groups created by group finder
• Ranked warzones are on for patch 1.3 but could be disabled if the quality is not there.
• Adding rewards for those who are neutral in the alignment (if not this update, then definitely 1.4)
• Free server transfers is just the beginning, mega server clusters is a concept in development.
• A new trailer for adaptive social gear was released in this panel

Game Update 1.3: Allies Overview

Two major themes: Lets Play together & Customize the way you play

Lets Play together

• Group Finder
• Free server transfers – make it easier to play with your friends. A lot of players created a lot of characters on different servers and when we introduced the Legacy system, they were kinda bummed – with the transfer you can regroup all your characters and put them under the legacy and really reap the benefits of all your hardwork. When the merge happens, we are using a very generous system so none of the hardworks you have done is lost.
• Free Trial – Maybe you have friends that have not tried the game yet – maybe they are reluctant to spend money on a game they don’t know if they are going to like. We had free trials in the past and they were a bit complicated – only on certain weekends, you had to give a token to your friends etc. Now we have simplified it and starting in 1.3 you will be able to play the game for free to a certain level permanently.
• Improved Tutorials – We have done a ton of improvements to the tutorials to ensure that even if you are completely new to the MMORPG genre, you will have a good experience.
• Performance Optimizations – Improving the performance on low and middle grade machines. Maybe you are trying to convince someone in your house to play the game – siblings, significant other and they were not have the best machine
• Mission Hyperlinks in Chat
• Keep original group after warzone – simple fix to make grouping with other people a much enjoyable experience.
• Same faction PvP on Alderaan Civil War

Customize your gameplay

• Per-character legacy perks – some players have just joined the game and it is all fresh and new to them. Some other players have played for 6 months and they have a very good understanding of what the game has to offer. We want to recognize that and whenever these experienced players create a new character to add to their legacy, we really want them to customize what they want to do with that character. If you really like PvP, you can take legacy perks to get more xp from PvP for example.
• Adaptive gear – make social gear scale with your armor type (i.e. light, medium, heavy)
• 30% reduction on mod extraction costs – small tweak that makes the life of those players that care about customization a lot easier.
• Significant improvements to Level 50 Flashpoint Rewards: Level 50 normal flashpoint rewards were not worth it. There is content available, players like to do it, but they don’t do it because they think it is not time efficient.
• Social points in Hardmode flashpoints
• Weekly missions to defeat world bosses.

In-depth View

Group Finder

• Group finder only show contents that are tuned to your level – not going to show flashpoints that are too low for your level or flashpoints that you can’t do it yet. It is going to have a list of things that you can do with other players at your level
• You can tell the group finder specifically what you want to do and what you don’t want to do. Of course, the more picky you are, the more difficult it is going to find players that want to do the exact same thing.
• We will reward you for being less picky – i.e. yes I want to do any flashpoints at my level.
• You can specify the role you want to play – this is particularly important in the levels 10-30 where you havn’t really specialized a lot – your character is well able to do all kinds of different roles.
• Role Icon
• Offers teleport to players for instanced content (i.e. flashpoints) – you can get into the action straight away, no need to wait for players to travel back from where-ever they were etc.
• Protect the players – in a normal group group leaders have a lot of power – they can define the loot rules, kick people etc. Kicking players requires vote-kicking.

Legacy Character perks

• We know you have being playing for quite a while because your legacy levels is quite high. These perks are not meant for those who just joined the game – they probably don’t even know the difference between the different contents.
• Purchased with credits
• Perks have a required legacy level
• Some perks requires another perk
• Examples:
  - Incrased experienced from flashpoints, warzones, space missions, class missions, and exploration
  - Increased companion affection gains from gifts and conversations
  - Increased chance for companions to craft expectional gear
  - Reduced the time it takes for a companion to sell junk items
  - Summon a droid in the field to repair gear and buy/sell items
  - Reset your skill point specialization in the field
  - Unlock the ability to use some speeders at low levels
  - Faster Transit to a number of destinations

Augmentation Tables

• Augmentation system currently great if you want to craft gear for yourself but it is not so great for those looking to commission gear from crafters as there is a high chance for the item to not crit and gain an augment slot.
• Augmentation slots on all armor pieces (premium – green items and better)
• Kits are crafted by crafters – not cutting crafters out of the loop
• Make both crafters and non-crafters life easier – crafters can make kits, put them on market, non crafters can just buy a kit from crafters and add a slot on their own time.

Adaptive Gear

• Designed for social gear
• Augmentation table solve the augment issue to social armor but doesn’t solve the armor type (medium and heavy armor users received penalty)
• New Armor type – always best possible rating.

Q&A with Emmanuel Lusinchi

Q: It is coming out this summer? Can you be more specific than just this summer?

A: I could but I would get in trouble. Basically we are testing it, we want to have a bug free release as possible – we are all about quality. It should be on the test server soon but I won’t go into much more details than that

Q: Its there going to be a MAC version of the game?

A: I am going to be honest, we are not working on one. We know that it works quite well in Bootcamp but it has not being required until now. We always listen to our customers and would-be customers and it has not come up as a priority. We are expanding the market, we are going into new territories and it would make some sense to do it for a new platform but I am not aware of the development at this time (for Mac).

Q: Coming from a previous big MMO, I quite like numbers and I find it quite hard in SWTOR, for example, without having any addon support. Damage meters are invisible so I actually don’t know how well I am doing and it is very hard to diagnose for example, if you are dying in a group situation to find out where the problem is. Are you plannin to let on addons into the field or implenting damage/healing meters.

A: We released in 1.2 a way for players to build damage meters, it is not instantaneous – it is not something you can see while you play but basically we have introduced a kind of format where all the combat logs is outputted to the hard drive. Within days, the community has created really good tools to analyze not only your own damage but share the files with your guild mates. There are now fan made apps that overlay damage meter on top of your game so you guys are doing the work for us! Seriously the players are going to be able to define what they want much better than what we could.

As for addons, it has always being our plan to do that and that is something we being plugged at it. It is fairly complicated, there is a lot of security and fairness issues. (i.e. if someone made an addon that is so good it gave you an advantage then everyone has to play with it).

Q: When are we going to see HK-51 droid?

A: Yes, we are not talking about that. I know there has being a few leaks on websites kind of hinting at it so I am going to hint at it as well and that will be all.

Q: New races in the game? What races we can expect to see and what traits will they bring over?

A: We call them species, it is something that has being requested by your players since beta. It is something we have been thinking about it. I am not going to tell you when unfortunately because the marketing person here will get very upset with me.

Let me first explain why we don’t have them in the game already. People tell us look there are Voss NPCs, I see them in the game, why can’t I play one? Well that is because we have like 3 heads for them and 2 different skins. If we give that to you, you would say awesome I can play a Voss, but wait a second there are only two different skins – I want 20 like the other races have. So it is not just a question of grabbing an existing a model and giving it to the player.

It is quite a lot of work but it is prioritized as we know it is something that players are very excited about so it is definitely something we are working on it. I can’t tell you what race we are going to release unfortunately.

Q: You are adding a lot of new content to the game and stuff like that. Will there will be a point where you feel the game itself is actually finished and stop adding contents to it?

A: No, that would be a terrible thing. It’s a service, it needs to never be finished or otherwise you will be like why I am paying for this service when you guys are not doing anything anymore? So its part of the deal – you pay your sub every month and we give you new stuff.

Q: Any plans for customization of your companions?

A: Funny story, we planned to have customizations with your companions from the very beginning but the we changed our mind. Players then asked – why don’t you have customization? Yes, you are right. We are going to continue to introduce new skins for companions but it is not a great system – it is a ok system we introduced into the game very quickly (actually I implemented it so I can brag about it a little bit). We are working on a much better system but it is not the highest priority atm although it is very important. There is a cognitive dissonance when you have two sith warriors meet up with identical Vette. 

Q: What is happening with ranked warzones? They were suppose to be in 1.3, but they are not?

A: Oh no, it’s a warzone question! Ranked warzones, we added them in 1.2 to the PTS. You can have a very good design on paper and it is a very good design when you prototype it, and when you put it with the rest of the game you realize that it is not that good. The problem with ranked warzones we found just before we released 1.2 was that we let people just queue by themselves for ranked warzones. When you have ranked warzones, the important thing is your rank goes up and down based on your wins/loss. Something that is very personal, your rank, was in the hands of complete strangers that you have no control over. You could be starting a warzone and then you notice that guy on your team who is just terrible and just abort the warzone when the team loses. It is one thing to be upset at end of the match with your teammates whom you communicate in vent etc but it is a different thing to be upset at strangers. Rather than releasing it, we decided to disable it.

We went back to the drawing board to create a good experience where you queue up for the ranked warzones as a complete team (not a group of 4 but a group of 8). We also had to make sure that once the warzone is over, your group is not dissolved. When we made this decision, we realized that we have to fix a lot of things to give you a good experience.

It is going to be on for 1.3 but whether it is enabled or disabled it is going to dependent on all the testing we done internally and on the PTS. It is going to be very disappointing personally and for you guys if it is not on but then again we reserve the right to postpone it if it is not to the quality we want.

Q: Free server transfers, are they are going to be limited and if not how are you going to stop people from exploiting it?

A: We are testing the transfers. Of course we kind of tested it when we opened up the Asia Pacific servers but we are trying to make a much better interface. We have not decided on the details of whether allowing you to go wherever you want, which is what I would prefer. Now the exploitable part, the fear that someone who is very rich on one server will take all his money to another server to dominate the market. We are taking some steps but it would be to punish players who have being exploiting (server transfers is a good time to really catch them). We are not planning to penalize people who have being playing the right way. If you cornered the market and made a little fortune for yourself then good for you, we are not planning to limit you in one way or the other.

Q: Will it ever be possible to have more than one link between family members in the legacy system? (i.e. this is this person’s child, not these two people’s child).

A: I designed that part of the legacy feature. There are other things I like to add before so that is not a priority. One of the features I really like to add is the new relationship- Master and Apprentice.

Defining who is the child of who can get really complicated so I don’t think we are going to do that.

Q:Adding rewards for people who stay neutral on the side of the force?

A: I hope so. It was an original design in the game – it would have being cool to have that guy – grey Jedi but then we realized it was a lot more complicated. So it is definitely coming, in fact I announced it during the guild summit and people were wondering where it was.

It is going to be progressive, there is a lot of rewards for being light/dark side and we are going to add rewards for being neutral. It is going to be in either this update or the next one.

Q: We play on a very low population server and most of our guildmates have quit. I understand that group finder in 1.3 will help but are there any plans to merge servers or move them into clusters.

A: Server transfer is a first step – it allow you to go a server you think you will be happy for whatever reason. MMOs are social phenomena like Facebook, the more people you have to play with, the better the experience. I know Daniel Erickson has mentioned the concept of mega-servers. It is a great concept because if you have a server population that can accommodate a lot more players, you will be much more likely with your friends and everything is suddenly better – warzones pop all the time, group finders pop all the time.

Continue reading »]]> Hey everyone, one of the big features of Guild Wars 2 are the dynamic events. There are over 1500 unique dynamic events available in GW2 at launch and you will encounter a fair bit of them as you level up in the various zones. When the word dynamic comes to mind, one cannot help but remember another MMO that was launched last year – Rift. Rift was the MMO that really brought the idea of a dynamic world to the MMO market. At any one time, there are legions of monsters invading peaceful outposts all over the world and adventurers must band together to push back the invading forces. The purpose of this article is to give both Rift players and potential GW2 player an idea of the similarities and differences of dynamic content between the two games.

What is dynamic content?

Dynamic content, in its very basic MMO form, means that you can’t just AFK anywhere you want. A peaceful town you just AFK’ed in could be invaded by a horde of monsters any minute and get your character killed. The world is always changing. In most traditional MMOs, you have static content, quest hubs always look the same with same NPCs standing in the same spots 24/7. Nothing gets changed unless there is a specific patch that added or removed some stuff. On the other end of the spectrum, you have the real world where you experience extreme dynamic content. You can go to a place, make some changes to it and it will never be the same for the next person that visit the place. Obviously, in MMOs you simply can’t reach the dynamic extreme of the real life world because it is just too complex. To make the virtual world feel like a living and breathing world, dynamic content was introduced as a middle of the road solution.

In a MMO that focuses on dynamic content, the places that players visit are never really the same to a certain extent. Player actions have consequences that can affect their surroundings. Failure to defeat an horde of invading monsters, for example, could mean that the nearby town gets occupied and all the NPCs/merchants disappear. The town may also get a makeover from the monster invasion – buildings crumble and the sky turns dark. To allow all players access to the same content, these dynamic content do reset over time either by player actions or a timer.

Rift’s Dynamic Content

One of the things that a lot of people who never played Rift assume is that Rift’s dynamic content is all about rifts. Rifts are involved but they are by no means the only part of dynamic content. In addition to the rifts that populate the landscape, there are also invasions, and colossal zone events.

Rifts

Rifts, not surprisingly, are the core of Rift’s dynamic content. Rifts are basically portals in the sky that opens up to release monsters. A characteristic of Rifts is that they have multiple stages – defeating one wave of monsters within the allocated time will allow you to proceed to the next stage where another wave of enemies spawn. The stages are increasingly difficult and usually culminate to a boss fight in the final stage. There is an inherent scaling present in these rifts as progressing to later stages of the rift will require you to kill x amount of mobs under a certain amount of time. Soloers tend to not reach these stages unless they are doing it other people.

Rifts are the way Rift has introduced dynamic content to their otherwise static gameworld. The location of the rifts are predictable and the stages a player must face to close it are also predictable. However, what is dynamic about these rifts is that they can open up anytime. You could be questing nearby and suddenly an unopened rift (tear) opens up and then you are given a choice to either close the rift and get some rewards or keep on questing.

Invasions

Open rifts, if not closed by players, will continuously release monsters that invade nearby towns/outposts/quest hubs. If they are unhindered, they will kill off the nearby NPCs and establish their footholds. In some aspect, one player’s choice of not closing the nearby rift has a consequence on other players that are also in the same area. To re-gain access to these NPCs, players must kill off these monsters and this will allow the NPCs to respawn.

Colossal Zone Events

Colossal zone events is an invasion that basically affects the entire zone – a bunch of rifts open up, major towns/quest hubs get invaded, and players must band together to stop invasion. These zone events have multiple stages that send you all over the zone: the first few stages usually have you close X number of rifts and the final stage usually have a colossal boss that takes groups of people to defeat. Some of these events (especially those on Ember Isle, released with patch 1.6) are truly epic in nature and the entire event may take an hr or so to complete. While the majority of the stages require you to kill monsters, some stages do have a bit more variety such as allowing you to man catapults to shoot at a flying dragon or transform you to a golem so you can go around and stomp nearby mobs.

There is scaling based on the number of players present in the zone. Initially, the frequencies of zone events was dependent on the number of players in the zone. A lot of players took advantage of this by gathering in specific zones and force these zone events to pop. Later patches seemed to have made this more random as to introduce more variety into the zone events selection. Regardless, the bosses of these zone events scale their HP/damage with the number of players. Their HP pool was drastically increased in response to players’ complaints that the bosses die too quickly.

Rewards and end-game consequences

A major feature of Rift is other players do not negatively impact your rewards. There is no shared loot table for those public rifts/invasions/zone events and everyone who contributed gets rewarded based on their contribution. If you want to get healed/buffed, you still need to join public groups. Public group is Rift’s solution to curbing the competition between players while doing dynamic content. Joining a public group is fairly simple and you can simply target someone and click a button to be part of their group. That being said, there are still some issues with tagging mobs by members of different public groups which can affect some minor things such as xp gain.

Participating in these zone wide invasions, rifts etc will reward you with currencies that you can spend on vendors to buy better gear. End-game content required players to farm rifts, zone events etc in order to obtain the currencies (inscribed sourcestones) needed to purchase some end-game items (planar essences).

Overall impression of the dynamic content in Rift

Rift is one of the MMOs that really brought the concept of dynamic content into the mainstream MMO market. In some ways, it set a benchmark for other MMOs to match and surpass for dynamic content. Rift still has quite abit of traditional MMO element (i.e. quests and raids) and some of its dynamic content is quite repetitive (once you played in a zone long enough, you get to see all the zone events and all the rifts are basically the same, just scaled up in difficulty).

Guild Wars 2’s Dynamic Content

In some ways, I feel GW2 took Rift’s model, shook off all the traditional MMO elements, and polished it up. If you have played Rift, seeing towns/outposts getting invaded is nothing new but you may not realized how immersive the dynamic content can be.

Tasks (also known as hearts)

GW2 remove questing from its game but not completely. Instead of roaming from quest hubs to quest hub picking up dozens of quests, you roam from one task to another. Tasks is sort of quests in disguise but it is also different. Basically, you will see an empty heart icon on the map. If you hover over it, it will tell the level of the task.

Once you arrive in that area, you will get a text on the right side of your screen that says Help Farmer Diah for example. Under it, it tells you you can do a variety of things- in this case for this particular task you can watering corn, stomp wurm mounds, feeding cattle, and defending the fields. Note that unlike traditional quests, you do not need to speak to the NPC (Farmer Diah) in this case to start the task. You just go to the area and the task is on your screen automatically. Speaking to the NPC will give you some lore and background information to complete the picture.

Doing anything in that list above will give you credit. Eventually that progress bar will fill to full and the empty heart becomes a filled heart. You will get some coins in the mail but more importantly it opens up the merchant (it is the person with filled symbol) that allows you to purchase items with event currencies.

Dynamic events in its simple form

While doing tasks, you get occasionally see an event pop up to the right side of your screen. For this particular task I was doing (Help Farmer Diah), an event poped up that asked me to kill a giant wurm tearing up Jeb’s field.

If you look at your mini-map, you will see that it is conveniently located right next to the task area (the orange circle tells you the area of the dynamic event).

By helping to kill the giant wurm, I get reward with some coins, experience, and the event currency (purple triangle icon).

Remember earlier I was telling you that completing the task opened up the merchant? That particular merchant sells stuff you can purchase with the event currencies you just earned.

What GW2 did here is they cleverly integrated dynamic events with the tasks. You are off doing your task and an event nearby pops up; you complete it, get rewarded with currencies and then spend that currency on the merchant you just unlocked via completing the task. There is no roaming around the zone hunting for dynamic events, it just happens and integrate itself seemlessly into the normal activities. In Rift terms, it is like you are off doing some quest and a rift spawns nearby; you complete it and when you turn in your quest, you unlock the merchant that allows you to purchase rewards with the rift currencies.

Unlike the rifts, GW2’s dynamic events are not predictable. When you encounter a rift, you know it is going to be say 5-6 stages with a boss at the end. Different flavored rifts (i.e. fire, water) provides a different variety of mobs but you go through the same process of killing X amount of mobs under a certain amount of time to spawn the next rift stage etc. You don’t always get the same dynamic event near an area, you may encounter different ones everytime you visit. As mentioned earlier, there will be  1500 unique dynamic events at launch so you will see quite a bit of a variety every zone.

Another interesting bit about these dynamic events is that they are related to area/task you are doing and don’t always involve combat. For example, one task might have you assist farmer Eda to drive off bats and spiders from the orchard. Once you enter the orchard, you may encounter a dynamic event that asks you to collect apples for Eda’s famous apple pies.

Rift players may be familiar with a zone event that involves you escorting a bunch of caravans from one of the zone to the town center. You will be happy to know that such escort dynamic events are plenty in GW2 as well. During the escort, you will encounter plenty of scripted ambushes to keep you on your toes.

Dynamic events – the more complex version

Many MMO players will do these dynamic events as part of their usual activities and not pay a second thought to it. I admit I was also part of that group. What I didn’t realize at the time is how these events are linked together and you can really see it if you stick around after one event and spend your time observing the NPCs.

A lot of dynamic events are linked together form part of a chain. You succeed one event, NPCs will do certain activities that will trigger the next event in the success branch of chain. If you fail one event, NPCs will do another set of activities that trigger the next event on the fail branch of the chain. This is really where GW2 differs from Rift’s dynamic content. In Rift, if you fail an event, towns get invaded and NPCs get slaughtered. You sit around waiting for the event to reset or other players to band together and retake the town so you can keep questing. There are consequence for failing and in some ways you are being punished for it. GW2 basically spin this around and opens another door. You failed an event? You still get rewarded (abit less than if you succeed) and you just opened up a bunch of events that can occur if you failed it. This really introduces re-playability, consequence of actions, and variety into the dynamic content sphere.

Grouping is not required for these events at all and the player competition is minimized although not eliminated. In terms of killing mobs, both you and other players will get credit if you two attack the same mob. The competition arises on objectives that asks you to collect things. Since only a limited number of these objects (i.e. apples) spawn for you to collect, you might have a hard time dong some events in a crowded area.

Higher level players will be scaled down in lower level areas. This eliminates the problem of higher level players farming lower level events you see sometimes in Rift. What’s more, this allows higher level players to enjoy the content they might have missed while leveling up and really introduces re-playability into the game areas.

Meta Events: Meta events are a collection of dynamic events that link together than span over a large area of the zone map to tell you a story. They usually ends in a [GROUP EVENT]. In some ways, you can think of these meta events as the colossal zone invasions in Rift. You can tell when you encounter a meta-event because you will see this brown box at the top of the dynamic events you encounter.

Immersion and triggering dynamic events: While a a lot of the dynamic events trigger on their own, some dynamic events are triggered by talking to NPCs. If you encounter NPCs with this icon above their head, you will know that talking with them will trigger a dynamic event.

This creates an interesting scenario because the game rewards you for exploring and following NPCs around once an event is finished. NPCs simply don’t disappear once an event is finished, they continue on with their normal activities, carry on conversations with other NPCs and sometimes allow players to trigger the next dynamic event in the chain by talking to them.

I will leave you with a quote from Colin Joanson, one of the game devs for GW2, he summarize the immersion of dynamics events in GW2 quite well.

Also a bonus tip, after any dynamic event (or event chain) it’s always a good idea to follow the key NPC’s or investigate the area after the event has been completed. If you don’t run off, you’ll often times find they build new buildings, setup stores, build defenses, kick off new events (after some dialogue), repair broken things, build siege weapons, change the weather, have new spawns appear/change, and more as a result of dynamic events concluding.

When and What?

When is it?

During the recent Electronic Arts Financial reports it was mentioned that two new content packs – Legacy and Allies will be available in Q1 (Quarter 1, source). Since Q4 for the previous year ended on March 31, 2012, Q1 for this year will start on April and last until the end of June. Patch 1.2, Legacy, was released on April 12, so we can expect patch 1.3 titled Allies to release sometime in June (a bit too late to release it in May given that there are less than 2 weeks until the end of month and the patch has not hit the PTS yet).

When is patch 1.3 hitting on the PTS? On May 17, Joveth Gonzalez, the Associated Online Community Manager said on the SWTOR forums that “We’re in internal testing on the major features right now, and we’re getting closer every day to deploying Game Update 1.3 to the Public Test Server”.

What is confirmed to be in 1.3?

Four big features

Group Finder

Group finder is essentially the meat of patch 1.3 (it has being nicknamed the group finder patch). Most of the information can be found in the official podcast but here are the details.

• Available for normal flashpoints, hardmode flashpoints, planetary heroic quests, and storymode operations.
• You choose what role(s) you want to fulfill (choices are presumably limited by your advanced class – i.e. snipers can’t choose tank role for example).
• You can select specific flashpoints/contents you want to queue up for.
• You can also choose a random flashpoint/hardmode flashpoint. If you do it this way, you may get daily rewards. The daily reward for random hardmode flashpoints will be Black Hole Commendations (source)
• Group finder is same server only (IGN interview)
• It will teleport you to the target location once the queue is ready (IGN video)
• Rewards (see screenshot below)
• Vote kick feature to ensure fairness (MCM Expo)

Patch 1.3 Legacy features

You can already see this in the COMING SOON tab of your legacy window although the unlock details are not available at this moment. This may change once patch 1.3 is being finalized but basically you have

• Advancement: Get more xp from killing major enemies in flashpoints, more xp from doing space missions, and more xp from completing warzones (see chart below, info taken from IGN video and subject to change in final build). Each rank requires the unlock of previous rank and the xp bonus is cumulative (Getting rank V will cost 200k-300k credits in total and give you 2+4+6+8+10 = 30% xp bonus)

It was just pointed to me that the legacy window in the video looks different, here are the differences. NEW refers to the window in the video and OLD refers to the legacy window currently on live servers.

Note that there are now 2 additional new row of buttons, each with the XP icons on them. So this will be in addition to the flashpoint, warzones, and space mission xp boost in the current build (could be xp bonus for class quests  – source)

• Companions: Get more affection from gifts, conversation choices, increase the chance of companion crit while crafting, and companions sell junk faster.
• Travel: Faster sprint, ability to use level 25 speeders at level 10

If you look at the legacy window in the video, you will also notice that the travel section was also modified. There are now 4 new icons that have replaced the previously 2 icons for faster sprint and a new icon resemble the earlier speeder icon was also added (this might mean that you get access to the level 40 speeder at an earlier level).

Edit: It appears these 4 new icons are actually travel “ports” to different planets. See this quote from Darth Hater interview released recently – also the icons resembles planets.

You can, for example, buy the right to use the various speeders at an earlier level, gain bonuses to companion affection from gift giving, earn new abilities that allow you to jump your character quickly to key locations throughout the galaxy, or even allow you to redistribute your skill points (‘respec’) in the field. • Convenience: Portable repair droid, field respec, portable mailbox.

In the video, you can see that we still have the 3 levels of repair droids but now we also have 2 other icons for portable mailboxes (probably unlocks to reduce the cooldown). it appears that the Medevac thingie (respawn at the med-center with more health) was removed (was kinda useless anyways).

Unfortunately, it appears that these legacy unlocks are character specific and not legacy wide. If you hover over the coming soon section of the legacy tab, you will notice this block of text.

Augment slot

Augment slots were first mentioned as part of patch 1.3 in the Official Podcast. Recently, more details were revealed in an interview with Inquisitor’s Roadhouse. This was followed by David Hunt with three dev posts on May 18 giving out more details (#1, #2, #3)

• Augment Slots can now be added all items that are green in quality or above (doesn’t have to be crafted item. any item will work)
• Augment slots are tiered from MK-1 to MK-6. The tier of the augment slot will determine the tier of augments you can add to it. Augment slots can be upgraded to a higher tier (max is MK-6 but there are plans for MK-7 and MK-8 in the future).

• To add an augment slot, you will need to go to an item modification station and use credits + augment kits. Credits rank from 4.5k to 50k for augmentation slots of MK-6 tier.
• Augment Kits are acquired via three professions exclusively: Armstech, Armormech, and Synthweaving. These three professions make identical kits and the schematics for these kits can be acquired via their crafting trainer.
• Augment kits are tiered like augment slots. To make an augment kit of a certain tier, you will need 10 augment slot components of that MK tier. These components can be obtained via Reverse Engineering crafted items of the same MK-tier (you get 1 component everytime you get an item, regardless of its slot or quality – i.e. purple chest and green bracers all yield 1 component) – source). These augment slot components are in addition to the crafting materials you would have obtained via REing these items pre-1.3.
• Alternatively, you can obtain augment slots by crit-crafting items. The item level will determine the MK tier of the augment slot post 1.3.
• For gear pre 1.3 that contains an augment slot, they will be converted to the MK tier augment slot corresponding to the item level or the inserted augment level (the higher of the two). So if you have a level 27 item containing a level 49 augment pre 1.3, after patch 1.3 it will be converted to a level 27 item with a MK-6 slot (since level 49 augment corresponds to MK-6 slot) (source)
• This means that if you have an empty augment slot on a crit crafted gear pre-1.3, they will be converted to the augment slot MK tier corresponding to the item level (i.e. level 27 item will have a MK-3 augment slot if it doesn’t have a higher level augment inserted into it).
• One thing to keep in mind is that you can upgrade augment slots to higher tiers – so even if you crit craft an lower level item in 1.3 or forgot to put a MK-6 (level 49) augment into your pre 1.3 items with augment slots, you can still upgrade them to the highest tier, it just costs credits!
• Augments, much like augment kits and augment slots, will be tiered after 1.3. You can only insert augments into slots that are higher or equal than your augment tier. (image modified from the Inquisitor Roadhouse interview  with the updated MK tier)

Adaptive Social Gear

Adaptive social gear is the ability for the social armor (which are currently all light armor) to “morph its armor rating based on the skill of the wearer” (Damion- Official Podcast). This essentially means that if you wear heavy armor, the social gear will morph into heavy armor for your character.

Some people tend to take this to meant that all the armor will be adaptive. This is not the case, the only kind of gear that was mentioned to be adaptive so far by the devs are social armor.

This feature, in conjunction with campaign armoring that carries set bonus and augment slots, will provide a bit more variety in armor appearance customization.

Other smaller features

More schematics: During the two recent friday Q&As (May 4th and May 11th), it was mentioned that patch 1.3 will bring more orange schematics for hands, feet, wrist, and waist (the number of hands & feet schematics was estimated at 75) via underworld trading. These feet/hands/wrist/waist schematics are potentially matching the 3-piece sets that are currently craftable by armormech/synthweavers (“We’ve wanted to open this up to players for awhile, especially because some outfits really need the belt in order to look right” – David Hunt, May4th Q&A).

Reduced extraction costs: Extraction costs will be reduced by 30% – this means that the current 44k per Q61 armoring/mod/enhancement extraction will be reduced to 31k or 93k for all 3 mods.

Overall Class Balance: Improved Usability for all classes, improved tanking threat, and improved resource management for commando gunnery and mercenary arsenal.

gabarooni: As a long time tank (nearly 10 years), I’ve come to the conclusion that holding Aggro is not fun. Tanks already have to watch their survivability, cooldowns, position mobs, watch their groups position and health, and fight the mobs—all of which I enjoy. Are there any plans in Game Update 1.3 to increase threat generation for tanks? Especially for Guardians and Juggernauts?

Austin: Actually, yes. We’ll have more detailed information for you soon, but you can expect some improvements in threat generation, AOE threat, and quality of life.

Hargan: Will the Commando Gunnery spec be rebalanced after the changes in Game Update 1.2 so that we are back on par with the DPS output of similarly geared Sages/Gunslingers/Sentinels in Operations?

Austin: I think I’ll confirm a lot of suspicions with this answer, but the bugfix that addressed Demolition Round scaling had a large enough impact on Gunnery DPS that it surprised us, too. Although Gunnery and Arsenal had been hitting our targets, it became harder to do so than we were comfortable with. Another way to say that is that the "low end" of our test results was hit too frequently by too many people. The changes you’re going to see are mostly in resource management and usability, which will make it easier for you to deliver the considerable damage you already wield. We’ll have more detailed information for you soon.

Brutalos: What class balances can we expect from Game Update 1.3 and will it undo some of the changes done in 1.2?

Austin: Game Update 1.2 brought damage dealing and healing roles closer to target than they had previously been. If for you and your class that meant a reduction in performance, that can be a hard thing for me to justify to you. I think it’s fair to say that some of those changes were made by reducing usability instead of just reducing numbers, and it’s these usability issues that we want to correct and negative changes to usability that we don’t want to repeat in the future. Like I said before, we’ll have more detailed information for you soon, but if I had to identify a motif for class changes in future updates, it’d be "improved usability."

Rumors and things that may or may not make it to 1.3

No dual spec: Unfortunately, dual spec has being confirmed to not be part of 1.3 in the April 27th Q &A by Daniel Erickson. However, it might make it to patch 1.4, which is going to be a bigger update. (“Game Update 1.3 is being kept a bit leaner to get the Group Finder and the next stage of Legacy in the game as fast as possible. After that we’ll be returning to some bigger updates and we’re hoping dual spec makes it for the next one”)

Nightmare Explosive Conflict? During the PaxEast Q &A, someone asked when Nightmare EC will launch and the answer was that the dev team is aiming for the next game update (1.3). However, Stephen Reid on May 16 said on twitter that there is no current ETA for Nightmare EC’s release although the team is working on it.

“Nightmare mode when it comes, won’t be just a title and a pat in the back. It will come with its own itemization so there will be a real reason to do nightmare” – Emmanuel PaxEast Q&A Day 3.

Torhead Leaks of patch 1.3: Torhead leaks has being going around the internet for a while now. It was pretty accurate for patch 1.2 and predicted Lost Island and Explosive Conflict. However, given that Bioware said specifically it was going to be a features patch and will be content light, it is doubtful if any of the leaked info for 1.3 will be true.

To give you an idea, the leaked 1.3 info predicted the companion HK-51, which was rumored to exist back in beta (although the quest in the Hoth bonus area for it was bugged). This is still likely given that Bioware always added some extended scavenger hunt/puzzles in the game every once in a while (patch 1.2 brought in the hunt for tauntaun and orobird pets). Also, during the MCM Expo, Emmanuel dropped this.

Q: When are we going to see HK-51 droid?

A: Yes, we are not talking about that. I know there has being a few leaks on websites kind of hinting at it so I am going to hint at it as well and that will be all.

The other two predictions for Patch 1.3 are a flashpoint called Titans of Industry and an operation called Terror from Beyond. Given that Bioware repeatedly stressed the content light nature of this patch, both are very unlikely to make it into patch 1.3 (especially the new operation since Nightmare EC has not been even confirmed for 1.3 yet).

Server transfers and Ranked Warzones

Server transfers these days is a very hot topic. You literally can’t go anywhere without seeing threads/screenshots etc about the need for server transfer. Bioware got the message and more details will be released soon.

So far what we know about server transfers are the following

• Coming in Early Summer
• It is going to be “free”
• First wave will be targeted free transfers from/to specific servers, followed by a broader system where you have a choice between promotional server transfers to specific servers or paid transfers to the server of your choice (April 27t Q&A)
• You will retain all the legacy unlocks, even if the legacy you are transferring to is of a lower level (May 11th Q&A)
• According to the Aussies who have transferred, they were allow to transfer as many characters as they wanted, although you can only have 8 characters maximum per server (source)

Ranked Warzones. The sudden removal of ranked warzones from 1.2 was very unexpected and upset a lot of hardcore PvP players.

The recent Q&A mentioned that the ranked warzones are on for patch 1.3.

Mindspore: Any update on Ranked Warzones in 1.3?

Daniel: Ranked Warzones is on track for 1.3. All the heavy lifting (ratings, group persistence exiting warzones, etc) is done and right now we are working through some emergent conflicts with Group Finder and the process of queuing for multiple activities at once with multiple temporary groups.

However, during the MCM Expo, Emmanuel mentioned this bit.

Q: What is happening with ranked warzones? They were suppose to be in 1.3, but they are not?

A: Oh no, it’s a warzone question! Ranked warzones, we added them in 1.2 to the PTS. You can have a very good design on paper and it is a very good design when you prototype it, and when you put it with the rest of the game you realize that it is not that good. The problem with ranked warzones we found just before we released 1.2 was that we let people just queue by themselves for ranked warzones. When you have ranked warzones, the important thing is your rank goes up and down based on your wins/loss. Something that is very personal, your rank, was in the hands of something so complete strangers that you have no control over. You could be starting a warzone and then you notice that guy on your team who is just terrible and just abort the warzone when the team loses. It is one thing to be upset at end of the match with your teammates whom you communicate in vent etc but it is a different thing to be upset at strangers. Rather than releasing it, we decided to disable it.

We went back to the drawing board to create a good experience where you queue up for the ranked warzones as a complete team (not a group of 4 but a group of 8). We also had to make sure that once the warzone is over, your group is not dissolved. When we made this decision, we realized that we have to fix a lot of things to give you a good experience.

It is going to be on for 1.3 but whether it is enabled or disabled it is going to dependent on all the testing we done internally and on the PTS. It is going to be very disappointing personally and for you guys if it is not on but then again we reserve the right to postpone it if it is not to the quality we want.

How to Use

Most of this is fairly self-explanatory. This page will have a list of most if not all of heroic missions and bonus series you will encounter while leveling from 1 to 50. It make an extensive use of Torhead and AMR tooltips for easy viewing. For every mission, there will be 

1) Torhead Tooltip for the mission if you need more details

2) Name of the NPC to start the mission

3) Location and Coordinates of the starter NPC.

4) Rewards.

For the rewards, some are class specific while others are not. For example, when turning in a heroic mission, you might get a choice between a prototype box, 3 planetary commendations and a piece of orange gear specific for your class/advanced class. The prototype box and commendations will be listed at the top of the table under All Classes and the class specific gear will be listed below under the appropriate class.

If a reward is not listed for your class, it just means that I don’t have the reward data for that particular quest for you class and I need your help to locate if possible. I have personally verified the reward data for sorcerers on the Empire side and Commando on the Republic side. Rest of the data came from Torhead comments for each particular mission or from the data gathered by AMR (Ask Mr Robot). Regardless, the reward for all classes follow a pattern. If a particular mission offer an orange chest for the classes listed and your class isn’t, you can bet accurately that you will get an orange chest as well. There are some exceptions like dual wielding classes may get orange custom offhand weapons while rest of the classes get blue quality non-moddable offhands.
